Much will be said about police cuts and the impact on our communities they will have. That is nothing compared to the loss felt by your family, loved ones, friends and colleagues across Essex and the wider police family. You died doing what any one of us would have done, protecting life and in dong so so cruelly lost your own. Rest in Peace. Andy & Christina, Met Police

There are few words that can capture the true feelings this murder has brought about.
I know his brother was touched by the support from his FB friends, but I don’t think he knows how much emotion his brothers murder has invoked. Truly amazing to see so many heartfelt wishes of support and condolences for the family and friends.
The man was a true hero and I hope his actions are noticed and recognised in the way of George Cross or some other recognition.

Just finished my family holiday yesterday no newspapers, no internet, no tv. Checked Facebook in a cafe in Gibraltar and felt like my guts had been ripped out. I didn’t know Ian as well as many people in the old Eastern division, but as the D shift critical incident Inspector he was my acting sergeant in Clacton for just short of a year. We shared a few jobs shared a few joke’s and I quickly realised he was an officer who could be trusted to get the important decisions right. He was a great officer who cared passionately about what truely mattered in our vocation and he will be sorely missed.

You were a friend of ten years, best man at my wedding and although in the last two years we just bumped into each other in town at Costa coffee and by text, you never stopped just checking me and the kids were ok. I have wonderful memories of all the laughs we had. What a truly selfless act of courage and bravery, I feel privileged to have known and been a friend of a truly brave man. My thoughts and prayers go to all your family. Rest in Peace my friend xxx

As a retired Police Officer I find that feel very strongly the deaths on duty of serving officers in whatever circumstances, despite it being 17 years since I last proudly donned my uniform. A death such as Ian’s though transcends things as he was off-duty with none of the protection and support that his colleagues would normally have provided.
I would like to see his bravery honoured in an appropriate fashion by the award of the George Cross. I sincerely hope that such an award would give some comfort to those from whom he was cruelly taken. I extend my deepest sympathy to his friends and family.
Officers such as Ian make me proud to have served under the Blue Lamp.
